Sports Betting in Colorado FAQ Answers to Common Questions and Concerns

HOW MANY SPORTSBOOKS ARE IN THE STATE? WHICH BRANDS DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM?

Each one of Colorado’s 33 gambling properties is permitted to launch an online sportsbook under a different brand name. About 20 have already done so. Some have partnered with a national operator (FanDuel, DraftKings), while others have created a sportsbook as part of their existing casino brand (Sky Ute Sportsbook, BetMonarch). State leaders set up the regulatory framework to ensure an open, competitive marketplace. This structure allows for a wide assortment of options for bettors to shop around for the most attractive lines, promotions and smoothest sportsbook app experiences.

WHICH BRANDS ARE THE MOST WELL-KNOWN AND TRUSTWORTHY?

Entrants into the Colorado market include heavy hitters such as DraftKings, FanDuel, William Hill and PointsBet USA, which established its Western hub in Downtown Denver. Daily fantasy sports giants DraftKings and FanDuel have dominated market share in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Indiana and have so far attained similar success in Colorado. Additionally, Barstool Sportsbook, an offshoot of the provocative Barstool Sports website, has leveraged its familiar brand to quickly become a popular choice among younger bettors in Pennsylvania and Michigan. As the market matures, Barstool will likely chip away at the substantial market share DraftKings and FanDuel have gained. As far as safety and trustworthiness are concerned, you need not worry — sports betting in CO is highly regulated, so your money is always safe.

WHAT TYPES OF SPORTS BETS CAN I MAKE?

All the most popular bet types are available, including spread bets, moneyline, game and player props, totals, parlays, teasers, futures, in-game wagers and more.

State regulations allow operators to take action on college sports events, as well as events on the international stage such as the World Cup and Olympic Games. Licensed sportsbooks are prohibited, however, from offering bets on high school sports events and video games that are not sanctioned by a sports governing body. In addition, bettors are restricted from placing prop bets on individual college athletes.

CAN I PLAY FROM OUT OF STATE?

No. players must be physically within Colorado state lines in order to place bets for real money.

DO I HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT IN ORDER TO PLAY?

While persons under the age of 21 are prohibited from placing legal sports bets, out-of-state residents of age are eligible to wager on sports as long as they are physically in Colorado.

HOW WILL THE SITE KNOW THAT I'M IN COLORADO?

Colorado regulations require sportsbook operators to utilize a geofencing system in order to reasonably detect whether or not you are in the state. This is usually done by adding an extension to your internet browser or using the location detection capabilities on your smartphone.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BET AT A KIOSK?

Yes, but all self-service betting kiosks must be located in approved designated sports betting wagering areas, according to Colorado regulations. This means that your local sports bar will not be allowed to offer kiosk betting, but you will be able to find kiosk betting options at many retail casinos.

ARE ONLINE CASINOS AND POKER SITES LEGAL NOW TOO?

No. Both online poker and online casino games remain illegal in Colorado.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF REGULATING CO SPORTS BETTING?

The Limited Gaming Control Commission is tasked with overseeing sports betting activity in the state. In 2020, the commission approved a set of regulations crafted by the Colorado Department of Revenue’s Division of Gaming, which will assist in enforcing the rules.

HOW DOES CO'S TAX AND FEE STRUCTURE COMPARE TO OTHER STATES?

With a 10% tax rate on the net revenues of land-based and online sportsbooks, Colorado designed a tax structure that is fairly similar to other jurisdictions such as New Jersey and Indiana. The structure is less favorable for operators in several other states, most notably Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The state’s licensing fees are also a bargain compared to states such as Illinois, which assesses a $1 million renewal fee every four years.

Colorado Sports Betting Legislation More On CO's Sportsbook Bill

What’s in the law

Here are the main points of the law:

  • Who can play: Anyone 21 years and up who is physically inside the state
  • Betting locations: Retail casinos and mobile and internet-connected devices (desktop browser and smartphone)
  • Who is responsible for regulation: Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission (LGCC)
  • Operator tax rate: 10%
  • Annual licensing fee: $125,000 upon license approval, plus an annual sports betting operations fee
  • Where the taxes go: State water projects, funding for homelessness services, and gambling addiction treatment programs

Why this law is good for Colorado sports bettors

Mobile betting apps

More than almost any state in the nation, bettors in Colorado will benefit immensely from mobile betting. State casinos are mostly located in remote mountain communities that can be difficult to reach. Few bettors attempt to negotiate the steep, windy roads in the middle of a winter storm to get to Cripple Creek or Central City. The mobile component gives bettors the option of registering for accounts and betting from their homes when a trip to a casino can be a little treacherous.

Legal and regulated marketplace

Sports betting is completely legal in Colorado. The 49 pages of rules created by LGCC, the state’s sports betting regulator, spell out specific consumer protections that keep your deposits safe and secure and ensure all the wagers offered by the licensed sportsbook operators are legitimate and fair.

Easy banking options

Since sportsbook operators are regulated, the deposits they accept from you, the bettor, are secure. Your money is safe and available for withdrawal whenever you want it. Plus you have a variety of options at your disposal to fund your account, from credit cards to PayPal to bank transfers. Additionally, if you are at the casino, you can go to the casino cage to cash out your winning bets.

Competitive Market Structure

With over 20 online sportsbook operators in the state and more expected to arrive in 2021, Colorado has created a competitive marketplace that benefits recreational and sharp bettors alike. Sportsbooks in CO continue to offer the best bonuses and promotions anywhere in the country. Whether you want the lowest vig, the best promotions, a loyalty program, or the widest selection of bets, chances are there is a sportsbook operating in Colorado that offers what you are looking for.

How Colorado sports betting was made possible

A bill legalizing sports betting moved through the Colorado Legislature expeditiously, passing in the Senate in May 2019, less than a month after it was first introduced. Weeks later, Gov. Jared Polis signed the bill into law. Despite Polis’ signature, state law required the measure to be put to a public referendum. Since sports betting was not legal under the state’s criminal code at the time, a referendum was required to amend it. In November 2019, the referendum, Proposition DD, passed by a narrow 51.4% to 48.6% margin.

After the rules and regulations were drafted and adopted by LGCC, sports betting kicked off in the state on May 1, 2020. Four well-known sports wagering operators launched on Day 1, and more have since followed. Colorado now has one of the largest online sports betting markeplaces in the country.
